haha! Look at me looking like a badass. I honestly thought the mic was going to fall from my hand because of all the shaking
When Shea Moisture asked me to be on a panel about protective hair styling, my first thought was “Me? Really?”. They were asking me to get up on stage in front of God knows how many strangers and speak authoritatively on something I’m honestly still a novice at.
After a couple of days of deliberation, I decided to go for it. I mean, the worst that could happen was I would pass out on stage. Lol. FUN FACT: Up until I got on stage, I kept thinking someone would get up at some point when I had the mic and just start yelling “FRAUD!”
Where you at the Shea Moisture Nigeria Masterclass on Friday?
It was a great day filled with pretty interesting experiences put together by the Shea Moisture Nigeria team to celebrate as well as enlighten Natural Nigerians. Needless to say, the masterclass sessions were the highlight of the entire day and I personally learned a lot from the ones I was able to actively participate in.
Being a panelist sort of gave me a different perspective of the discussions, and I’m more than glad to share a few reasons why I am over-the-moon excited that I didn’t give into my ridiculous shyness and refuse the request to speak (publicly in front of a lot of strangers).
1. I (RE)LEARNED THAT EVERYONE HAS SOMETHING TO BRING TO THE TABLE
The protective styling panel was made up of an interesting mix of women – a dermatologist, a TV Host, a wig maker/natural hair blogger, a magazine editor, and my humble self. It seemed a bit odd at first, but all the weirdness went away when we really got into the discussion. We’ve all had our different experiences with our natural hair journey (d’uh), and it was wonderful to see different people in the crowd react to what each person had to share. Seeing people relating with what I had to say didn’t just make me feel more comfortable sharing my truth, it also made my day.
2. IT WAS ONE STEP TOWARDS BEATING SHYNESS
I am incredibly shy – you would know this if you’ve ever read my 30 random facts from a few years ago. This shyness is partly the reason why I stopped blogging for a while. I consider myself to be a life(style) blogger, which means I often feel like sharing a whole lot. But then I get shy about sharing some stuff on here, and also shy about pushing my posts and even my business. So, getting up on that stage and doing the thing, is definitely a victory on my scoreboard.
3. THE GOODIE BAG WAS LITTY
And I’m not even ashamed to say it – Shea Moisture Nigeria comes correct with their goodie bags. You know this. I got some really good stuff that I am actually looking forward to trying. Primarily because they aren’t products that interfere with my routine, and also because they smell so amazing it would be ridiculous to just leave them lying around my room.
I’m actually looking forward to doing something like this again. I feel so great about it, I’m going to start putting up videos on my YouTube again. I have a couple of ideas already, but I’d like to know what kind of videos you’d like me to do. And also if you’d like to see me do these videos with anyone. Let’s do this!
